The kitchen sink is for music, schools and the library + fun with friends

A few pictures and notes from the last few days:

  1. Luke loves sitting in the kitchen sink listening to music while I'm working...I used to love listening to music too, although for me it was records on my record player and he has Alexa and Pandora lol...when I ask him to go entertain himself this is usually where I find him. It's been interesting having no toys in the house. We've done just fine. We get our stuff Thursday and I'm afraid I overpacked. The things I'm really looking forward to having are some toys (but not all), vases and candles, swimsuits and robes, my yoga mat, the little dog door stopper that was my grandmas, a silver mirror that will go in the kids bathroom, a chair for my office and my printer, some throw pillows. It's just been really nice having a pretty empty, simple house. Want to keep this feeling...
  2. We've visited 2 of the 3 schools we're considering for the kids and got library cards and books! Yay! Everything is just so picturesque...the library is next to the harbor and fronts a surf break...we got there before it (library) opened and counted crabs crawling on the rocks and watched the surfers, some of which were Luke and Zo's age...
  3. We had Vanessa (a friend of ours from Grand Junction days) over for dinner at the beach the other night, and then her and John (a new friend of Jeff's) over for breakfast yesterday morning and then we all went to a new beach (up north, fronting the Montage) and snorkeled and boogie boarded...soooooo fun...and John came back with us and he's so great with the kids, we all loved having him here...
  4. We went with Daddy to turn on the generator last night at the temporary employee parking lot and saw the most beautiful rainbow over the Lahaina "L" and then we had Chinese food and came home and I read the last of the kids' library books and we did sleep tuck-ins...the view out Sissy's window is an expanse of moon and stars, so beautiful to fall asleep to...
  5. Today over to Kahului for breakfast, The Incredibles 2 (which we're all so excited to see) and then erranding at Target, Costco, etc.
  6. Starting to settle in and lose that nervous feeling I initially had that we are so very, very far from everything...

Happy Sunday!

Solstice sunset, a way to measure the size of things + mail is awesome

fullsizeoutput_8bd3.jpeg
  1. Summer solstice dinner at our beach
  2. Me: "Wow look at that tree, it's really big!" Luke: "How many megabytes is is?"
  3. Paia Fish Market lunch with the kiddos, followed by checking out the Front Street banyan tree, a visit to the public elementary school, first trip to the library, food shopping with the kids picking their items (and each kids' items have to be bagged separately)...nice to get out and about...
  4. My husband got us the best vacuum and so grateful for it...sand is everywhere...
  5. Luke got his first postcard in the mail from one of his best friends. Such a thrill to get mail!

Crazy-close encounters with turtles, entertaining kids with no toys + "Where are all the unicorns?"

fullsizeoutput_8bd2.jpeg
  1. Maybe someday this'll be no big deal, but today is not that day. I took this with my iPhone with no zoom, turtles just hanging out, not spooked at all while we waded in the water...
  2. Kids are loving "Sight Word Bingo," good for keeping schoolwork going. Our markers are little shells we found on the beach...
  3. Zo a few days ago, when we were descending through clouds into Maui: "Mommy! Where are all the unicorns? Don't unicorns live in the clouds?"
  4. Amazon kid radio is saving my life right now as I try to entertain children with zero toys. Actually we're doing a pretty good job between listening to songs and coloring and playing with boxes eg the one the new coffee maker came in. And blanket forts. Helps that we can go for a walk and/or to the playground and/or to the beach every day as well...
  5. Love how easy it is to call or text the mainland from here...people sound like they're right next door...
  6. And speaking of next door, ahhh...the rooster next door that starts crowing at 4:25 each morning give or take a minute or two...I haven't decided yet if I love him or hate him...

Happy Wednesday!

Greetings from Hawaii!!

Hi! A couple pictures for your (late) Tuesday evening...the first was taken mid-coffee run the first morning...this is the beach that's just steps from our house...the second is "S Curves" which is a little bit of a walk...maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile each way...the kids and I did it this morning. It wasn't breaking today but apparently it's a pretty good little surf break.

Where to start? I don't even know how to get into this so some random thoughts:

  1. It feels like we're on a nice vacation, not actually living here. Not sure how long that will last...
  2. It's really really hot here...
  3. 2 times hanging out on the beach, 2 sea turtles hanging out with us...
  4. A sunset picnic at the park that fronts the beach last night...lovely as well...
  5. There are lizards IN the house eek. I saw a big one go under the fridge. Luke has caught 2 baby ones upstairs over the past 2 days. Luckily the baby ones are super easy to catch and put outside...
  6. I'm keeping my East coast clients and getting up to work at 5 AM. Which is going well. But I'm not used to the time difference...I had something yesterday that needed to be done end-of-day and at 10 AM my time I realized that meant in an hour!
  7. It is sooooooo wonderful to be back with my husband. And he did such a good job getting things set up here. Lots left to get in order but the basics are all in place...
  8. Neighbors we've met so far have been super nice...
  9. There's some astroturf where part of our back porch (lanai in the local lingo) has rotted away...Jeff and I have been sitting out there after the kids go to bed, watching the stars...
  10. I'm sleeping terribly. Sure it's just an adjustment thing...
  11. Wandered down to the fish market, maybe a 10-minute walk for makings for dinner...we're having Ono...super psyched...
  12. Loving living in a place again where you pull on a swimsuit every morning because you know at some point you're going to the beach...
  13. My husband has already made the nicest group of friends...excited to build a social circle here...

Happy Tuesday!

Colorado to LA: Road Trip 2018

So it turned out we had to ship the dog to HI out of LA...and then it made sense to ship the car out of there too...so...unexpected road trip! We made it super fun, staying at Airbnb's near Zion in Utah and then Lake Gregory in the San Bernardino mountains, which is a part of California I'd never been to and it was lovely. And then a nice lunch in Pasendena and then the Westin LAX, where we saw planes every 2 minutes out our window and Daddy joined us (YAY!) and we met a friend from Steamboat in Santa Monica and dropped the car off and dropped the dog off and last Friday got on a plane. Kids spent time on the trip finding double trucks and triple trucks and we had In n Out and visited the chapel where my parents got married had room service one night in LA because kids had seen it in Home Alone 2 and really wanted to try it and of course being reunited with Daddy was amazing. And traffic in LA is insane. And we are so glad to be here in Hawaii and have all of the logistics of arriving behind us.
