Back to school, "Why are you always in your dreams?" + independence on a walk

fullsizeoutput_9037.jpeg
  1. I came here for coffee after drop-off one morning a couple weeks ago and saw they had chocolate dipped ice cream cones...figured it would be a fun treat for kids first day back to school...they had last Monday off, were out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday for the hurricane, and yesterday school was out for cleanup from the fire that burned to right across the street from school...so grateful our sweet little school was spared...
  2. Nice little workout this morning...the first day I'm not feeling totally exhausted from hurricane insanity...
  3. Zo: "Why is it when you have dreams you're always in them?"
  4. Kids and I walked to get fish tacos for dinner and Luke likes to run ahead. Our rule is he has to stop at all driveways and streets and wait for Mama to cross...he's very trustworthy and has never broken the rule (and if he did the privilege would be gone)...it''s fun to watch his independence...
  5. Watching American Ninja Warrior with the kids...Luke especially wants to be a ninja when he grows up...

"Fortunate islands," worn out from the hurricane + little readers

IMG_1368.JPG
  1. A windy and rainy at times walk along the coastal trail this morning...felt good to get out and do something normal...
  2. The islanders are so resilient. Saturday, the day after the hurricane everything was for the most part back to normal. "Fortunate Islands" is a phrase I saw written on the chalkboard at Monkeypod where we had lunch today and it's so true.
  3. Kids seem pretty unscathed by the hurricane but Jeff and I have been exhausted...him from very physical work around the clock at the hotel and me from fear. I napped for about 4 hours yesterday and slept 10 hours last night...
  4. Getting organized for work this evening, while the kids play "Mommy and Daddy" outside...
  5. Reading one-on-one with the kids today, they are both doing so great.

Happy Sunday!

Hurricane Lane

Hurricane Lane came through this week and overall ended up being pretty minor.

I spent Tuesday and Wednesday getting emergency supplies (food, water, cash) and packing to evacuate.

We boarded up the house on Wednesday.

Jeff left for work Thursday morning knowing he couldn't return until everything was over. I tried to work Thursday but couldn't, the winds were blowing strong and I was really scared. My neighbors said they were staying and would look out for us, that we could evacuate with them to their mom's/grandma's house if need be.

Thursday night Felix, a new friend of ours, came over so I wouldn't be alone with the kids. I couldn't get to sleep and when I finally did (about 2 AM) the winds woke me 2 hours later, so strong I was afraid to look outside.

I went back to sleep for a couple hours and then just as I was getting up got a call from Jeff to evacuate to the hotel right away due to fires. That was a scary drive, smoke and ash and tree limbs everywhere.

Once we were at the hotel I felt much safer, we watched the fires burn and the storm break apart so that it no longer posed such a grave danger.

By Friday night I was sitting out on the balcony, watching it rain.

We returned home Saturday to minor damage to our fence. I slept a lot of Saturday, and 10 hours Saturday night, exhausted from the fear, really a sustained fight-or-flight state from early Thursday to Friday afternoon. Next time there's a hurricane I won't be so scared.

What an experience...and so grateful it wasn't anywhere near as bad as it could have been. So anxious to get back to normal now that it's over...

XOXO

Beach sunset, Tummy Land + fluffy pink pillows

fullsizeoutput_8f7f.jpeg
  1. Sunset at the beach last night...love the beach that time of day. Was going to stay out of the water just to stay unsalty and unsandy, but Zo wanted me to come in and how can you refuse a cute 6-year-old who wants to frolic in the waves with you?
  2. Zo is teaching her stuffed piggy the things she is learning in school eg sight words etc...it's pretty cute...
  3. According to the kids, when I was pregnant with them they lived in Tummy Land, which is a pretty big place with a dangerous area you need to stay out of, treats, a place to ride bikes, etc., etc. They talk about Tummy Land a lot these days...
  4. Lots of progress in the yard this weekend, cleaning out weeds and palms, cutting back our big blue bush, etc...
  5. Zo bought a fluffy pink pillow with her allowance vs a toy...
  6. A much more sane workweek coming up...grateful for that...

Happy Monday!
