Kitten Olympics, early morning workout + thank goodness for AC!
I read recently that kids in general don’t get a lot of free time to make their own fun…and then watched my kids entertaining themselves for hours playing with train tracks and after dinner doing some sort of complex obstacle course where they were competing kittens…made me feel good about having that part of what’s good for them covered…
Got a workout in at sunrise this morning, after sleeping fitfully all night worried about when I was going to fit my workout in lol…
Porch time last night and my husband and I started “Better Call Saul” together…I’ve seen Season 1 but he hasn’t…will be fun to catch up together…there are not many TV shows we both enjoy but this looks like it’s going to be one of them…
Pretty red and orange tropical flowers from our yard on the kitchen counter…
AC is running and so grateful for it…we went all summer without AC to save money but we’ve broken down and started using it…apparently September and October are the hottest months here and the humidity is pretty crazy right now…
Happy Friday!! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Tropical Storm Olivia, rating jokes + a strategy for listening to rap music
Tropical Storm Olivia passed without incident for us…I even let the kids go play in the rain…
Loving having an outdoor dining room table! At dinner last night Jeff looked over at me and said, “This is nice!” We are so appreciative of getting to eat together as a family…
Another night of made-up jokes, this time mom and dad and the other kid got to rate the joke (mom and dad on scale of 1-10, other kid whatever weird number they wanted). Then the kids had to add the numbers together for a total score…
Luke got a watch he bought with his allowance delivered from Amazon yesterday…boy is he thrilled with it…
Luke last week was asking about rap music and I tried to find some for him to listen to but it’s pretty hard to find something without swear words. I let him listen to one song all the way through and then he asked to hear it again. I said, “No because there are bad words in there and I don’t want them to get burned into your brain.” To which Zoey said, “It’s OK Mama. Luke knows where the bad words are and he can just cover his ears for them.”
Happy Thursday!

Our seeds have sprouted!, Tropical Storm Olivia + knock-knock jokes at dinner
The papaya seeds we planted are sprouting, yay! Apparently in about a year and a half we’ll be harvesting papayas!
In the middle of Tropical Storm Olivia as I write this…just some wind and rain, turning out not to be a very big deal, knock on wood…
Made up knock-knock jokes at dinner last night…a few were pretty funny…
Great night’s sleep last night…
Kids are home from school today…I’ve been working since 5 AM but should be done by 9 AM and have lots of fun things planned…
Happy Wednesday!

Wild Hawaii, a dining room table + good X-country races
- Hiked a new trail this morning up towards an abandoned arboretum...lost the trail about an hour in but talked to some people I met coming up when I was going down and have a better idea how to go next time. So beautiful and remote and just felt like a different world up there...
- We have a dining table out on our front porch as of yesterday and I am soooooo happy about it! We've done fine without but the ability to sit down and eat together...I'm so excited!!
- Kids had another X-country race yesterday and they both did great...love what an effort they are both making...
- We got a BBQ yesterday too (end of summer sale), and a few other little things for the house...and I cleaned...feeling so much like home...
- My dad got his Tesla!! It looks so gorgeous on FaceTime. Can't wait to see it in person...
- Need to make beds with clean sheets and then going to see if I can take the kids swimming in a sec...the surf looked a little high earlier but we'll walk over and see...followed by shrimp ceviche and taro chips on our outdoor table...and Jeff got us a treat for dessert at the store as well because he and I are going to do the Whole 30 starting tomorrow...and then reading and bed for the kids...we're all prepped for a busy week...
- I guess another hurricane (Olivia) is headed our way this week but the reports are it is going to be mild...fingers crossed...
Happy Sunday!!
Planets in the sky + chili in the crock pot
- Lovely to see Vanessa earlier this week...and do a beach dinner...and Venus and Saturn and Mars are so bring in the sky right now...
- Grateful to my husband for his help with the kids last night and this morning...
- Kids are getting into a groove with homework and it's not taking nearly as long as it used to...
- Chili for the school's Family Fun Night Chili Cookoff is simmering in the crock pot...
- Looking forward to having some of the weekend to relax!
Home-made ice cream, swimming in the rain with rainbows + today is all we have
- We made paleo strawberry chocolate chip ice cream from scratch yesterday--starting a Labor Day ice cream tradition--it turned out pretty yummy...
- An interval workout in the heavy rain...and a nice little wave at S Turns...I keep seeing what looks like a good surfing wave there with nobody on it...about ready to get organized re: surfing...I know having that will make me happier here...
- And in the same rain Zo and I went for a swim and it was delightful, the water was warm there were rainbows all around, the evening light was that beautiful golden...I told Zo I'll always remember this Labor day as the one when I went swimming in Hawaii with my 6-year-old daughter...she said us doing something just us girls should be a Labor Day tradition...
- New shampoo and conditioner left my hair looking so pretty last night...
- Thinking a lot and reminded again today about how all we have is the day we're in and that's what we should focus on...
- Zo sitting next to me making a craft for Daddy...
- Tonight: Hot dogs and chili and cole slaw and America Ninja Warrior...the season is almost over but it's been such fun watching it as a family...
Happy Tuesday!

Seabury Hall, "Miss Muffet" + new-to-Maui tips
- Kids had their second cross country meet at a beautiful old school called Seabury Hall about an hour away in the Upcountry, which I had never been to. It's gorgeous up there...can't wait to go back. Zo ran first with the kindergarteners and first graders and she did great, ran the whole half mile race and was one of the top 10 finishers. Luke did well too, also ran his whole race. So proud of them both...all we care about is that they try their hardest...
- Zo has been calling me "Miss Muffet!" I've got to get her on video doing it, it's so funny the way she says it...
- Costco after the meet (thanks for the membership Dad!) and finally our fridge is stocked again after the hurricane. We've got enough meat in the freezer for--gosh--maybe 6 weeks, really all we'll need for a while is fruits and vegetables from the farmer's market down the street, and maybe some eggs...I need to find someone with chickens who can sell us eggs...
- Got my hair done at a new place yesterday and love the results and the woman who did it for me...she gave me so many tips for living here...I was telling Jeff and he said she should put together a packet for newcomers...
- I'm upstairs in Zo's room getting organized for the coming month while the kids have some screen time...later I'm going to go for a hike and maybe snorkeling as well, maybe dinner at the beach tonight? Should be a lovely weekend...
