Late September, 2019

A few scenes from the last few days: Luke watching peers wrestle at Jui Jitsu, Zo making here vegetables into a clown face and is there anything cuter (or more creative) than “Stuffie Chess??” I also went away to Lumeria Maui this weekend as a belated birthday gift from my husband. Kids each gave me a stuffy to take along…and it was so wonderful and so relaxing, but I missed my family even though it was only 2 nights.

Happy Tuesday!

Last few days of summer...

Seasons don’t really matter here in Hawaii but I do feel the fact that everyone else I know is about to shift into fall while we stay summer. I’ll get out Halloween decorations this coming week to give us a feel of change lol. But in the meantime, good times this week with caterpillars turning into chrysalis as part of a school science experiment, kids bringing home pueo (owl) puppets, X-country (last week), gymnastics, Jui Jitsu, Jog-a-Thon (kids both ran 20 laps), last X-country race and then we accidentally discovered Costco isn’t crowded at 9:30 Saturday morning, so that’s when we’ll go from now on (bonus: there’s a Mexican restaurant right down the street that makes great Hueveos Rancheros), some time at the playground after Costco, a girl’s night out Saturday night with some friends and then some pool time at the newly opened pool on Sunday.

Mid September, 2019

Good times the past week or so, including:

  • A hike through the pine forest by the duck pond

  • A visit to Pumpkin and the other birds and ice cream under the banyan tree

  • There’s a protest that’s been going on since we got back from Colorado regarding a proposed telescope on the Big Island. Lots of cars driving with an upside-down Hawaiian flag and that of the Kingdom of Hawaii

  • “Highlights” magazine arriving, means so much to kids that they each get their own

  • Gymnastics, X-country, Jui Jitsu

  • A big part of Daddy’s pool project is finished! It looks spectacular. We went to see it after work and stayed for the most glorious sunset

  • We got a chess/checkers set and the kids made up their own game lol

  • A great surf session

  • An afternoon at the beach, climbing and jumping from the kids’ favorite tree

It’s a strange time of year as everyone I know is headed towards fall and we’re in this endless summer. I miss the seasons but also how lovely to not have to be wrapping up summer fun.

Happy Wednesday!

Early September, 2019

What a fun week we’ve had with adventures big and small:

  • Labor Day turtle beach/Mama’s Beach House beach excursion with Daddy

  • Friends from school asking if we’d met Pumpkin the bird and then making introductions…we’ll be back to visit Pumpkin again for sure!

  • A package with allowance-purchased toys (LOL dolls for Zo, Batman legos and racetrack for Luke) that took 10 days to get here but the kids were so excited when it finally did

  • Gymnastics…Zo is progressing so beautifully

  • Monopoly Junior

  • Jui Jitsu and Zo doing math quizzes with me while we watch Luke

  • Sacred Hearts Family Fun Night which was SO FUN…bounce houses and shave ice and face painting and a watermelon eating contest and hot dogs and 30 different kinds of chili to taste in the chili cookout…

  • X-country race…kids were tired from Family Fun Night…

  • A trip to the hotel for a construction noise check but we did get to feed the fish and Newman the black swan and have brunch there…so, fun for the rest of us. The hotel is looking so beautiful…this remodel they are doing is amazing…

Headed to the beach later and I think I’m going to set up the tent in the back yard for the kids to sleep in tonight…

Happy Saturday!

Late August, 2019

Fun week with me surfing baby waves, 2 little birds riding the fan outside while I worked, dinner with my friend Felix (and a Saturday date night with Jeff), school, a salad with arugula from my garden (which is growing well overall…carrots and chives didn’t germinate at all though), a trip to Whaler’s (we haven’t been there in ages), Jui Jitsu, gymnastics, X-country (kids are doing great, Zo is always so nervous before the race) and a tooth that was on the verge of being lost all day (and is now out).

Luke says we should skip Labor Day because it’s summer all year here, lol. We’ve kept it pretty mellow this weekend but we are headed over to the other side on an adventure tomorrow…should be fun…

Cross country, beach, dentist, library

Getting back into the swing of things around here, with the Kapalua race (with an obstacle course at the end that Zo loved and Luke did not) and Seabury this weekend, Sunday beach days, cross country practice, gymnastics, Jui Jitsu, school, dentist, library, homework, screen time (we’re watching “3 Below” as a family and “Glow” Jeff and I), hikes and yoga and surfing and work for me, Jeff cooking yummy tacos, reading together, sleep tuck-ins, etc. etc. Nice to be back into a routine after a fun but very unscheduled summer…

Mid-August, 2019

Jeff had to work last weekend, but—we got to spend the night in “Daddy’s Hotel,” which was super fun for us. They just completed the pond and were moving the fish while we were there. Lots of pool time with the kids and we also got to stay in one of the suites, so fun! Also surfing a couple times this week, back-to-school night, early-morning work sessions out on the porch, a couple hikes to the duck pond…

Early August, 2019

Back to school week this week! Second grade is off to a great start! Also pictured:

  • We’ve been going to Kohola Brewery (it’s kid-friendly during the day) once a week for a beer (or root beer) and games. This week was chess with Luke assisting Daddy against me…we went to dinner at Sale Pepe after which was such a treat…

  • Screen time (kids favorite way to relax, although listening to music and building with legos has been a close second this week)

  • Kona over trying to catch lizards

  • Ready early for school one day so popped by the beach park

  • Chasing chickens (beach park) and running the wall at school (we stopped back after the library) and Cross Country has started…lots of running…

Jeff has to work this weekend, but got us a suite in the new tower so we can hang out with him. I’m sooooo excited for a beautiful hotel room and the pool and dinner out (or room service) tonight!!

Happy Saturday!

Last week of summer vacation

What a great week we’ve had! Breakfast at “Daddy’s Hotel” (always a treat) and a viewing of the pool construction, a walk to S Turns and the biggest turtle I’ve ever seen, beach dinner with Jerica (Beyond Meat burgers, so yummy), meeting Habeeba at Secret Beach, the kids love the waves pulling them in and out of the cove and there’s a great climbing tree there too!

Also a close-up sighting of the pink sparkle truck and—bonus!—the driver had her hair in retro curlers (we were getting ready for potential hurricanes at Costco). Back to Jui Jitsu, packing up of school supplies and taking them into school (kids each had a checklist to make sure we got everything), stamps for letters, newly organized art caddies (with kids drawing on our bed one afternoon), slowly planting the garden one thing at a time…this picture is our arugula, a trip to Hoi Hoi Bakery (my new favorite thing about Hawaii) with Zo pretending her donut was a unicorn horn, Luke catching a lizard to put outside and then the lizard didn’t want to get off him.

Tomorrow a trip into Kahului (Jeff promised the kids Fun Factory as a last summer treat and I also think we’re going to see a movie) and Sunday time at our beach (storms permitting) and prepping for the first day of second grade!

Happy Friday Everyone!

Late July, 2019

What a fun week it’s been being back in Hawaii and also having Lenore who is a friend from high school and Habeeba who is a friend from San Francisco days out visiting with their families. Also we’ve had some school prep mixed in (kids go back August 5th and wanted to make sure we had time to order anything we needed to online) and kids spent their allowance they’ve been saving on a hot wheels track and LOL dolls, their favorite things these days. Beach and pool and Iao Valley and friends and time with Daddy and getting unpacked from Colorado and organized and ready for school…lots of good stuff.
